Scar Trees - Fitzroy Gardens
The scar tree in Fitzroy Gardens is a reminder of the Aboriginal traditions and lifestyle that existed in the greater Melbourne region before colonisation. Scarred trees are trees which have had bark removed by Aboriginal people to build canoes, shelter, shields and containers. Scars left on the tree are typically regular in shape with parallel sides and slightly rounded ends, with the scar usually stopping above ground level. Although the tree died in the 1980s, the scar itself on the remaining trunk has been preserved.
