Kings Domain Resting Place
Kings Domain Resting Place symbolises the first successful repatriation of Aboriginal remains in Australia. The skeletal remains of 38 Aboriginal people from Victoria were reburied in the Domain in 1985 after the were returned to Aboriginal custody from the Museum of Victoria. Campaigning led by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people during the 1970s and 1980s for the right to assert control over ancestral remains, leading to new legislation and policies, aimed at ensuring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander remains were treated with dignity and laid to rest following appropriate cultural protocols.
