We are joined by special guest Chris Boardman, a former Olympic champion to discuss point 5 of the Government’s 10 Point Plan which focuses on green public transport, cycling and walking.
Along with the task of decarbonising private vehicles, point 5 of the Government’s 10 Point Plan emphasises the importance of increasing the share of journeys taken by public transport, cycling and walking.
Following on from the previous episode which covers the acceleration of the transition to electric vehicles, Chris Boardman, former Olympic champion and Greater Manchester's Cycling and Walking Commissioner, is joined by Sayeh Ghanbari, EY UK&I Business Consulting Leader, and Ed Reed, Editor at Energy Voice, for the fifth instalment of the 10 Point Pod to discuss the transition to a more active and sustainable transport system by investing in rail and bus services.
This episode highlights:
- The UK Government’s pledge to invest billions of pounds to electrify railway lines, expand train routes around major hubs and make the UK’s towns and cities ‘worthy of Holland’ by encouraging people to move around sustainably.
- A significant focus of the Government’s plan is encouraging people to move from private to public transport. Electric vehicles could be one of the ‘biggest dangers’ because they give people a reason “not to change”.
- Behavioural changes have a key part to play to de-incentivise driving and make walking, cycling and green public transport more attractive travel options.
