In the fifth episode of the Strong When We Belong podcast series, host Amy Louisa Winepress, Director, Assurance, Ernst & Young LLP, is joined by David Tyler, Chair of the Parker Review and Trevor Phillips OBE, member of the Parker Review Committee, to discuss the racial and ethnic diversity, equity and inclusiveness in the workplace.
Reflecting on the latest Parker Review data and the progress made in increasing ethnic and racial diversity on UK boards in FTSE 100 and FTSE 250 companies, the speakers delve into the importance of having a multi-ethnic community in the workplace, as well as approaches that organisations can take to prioritise meritocracy over ethnic origin.
Citing examples and best practices of companies, the conversation then focusses on key highlights — 18% of the UK population are now from ethnic minority backgrounds. However, the overall ethnic minority directors account for 11% of all FTSE 250 board positions (up from 10% in 2021).
The session concludes with a discussion on the possible barriers to senior leadership for ethnic minority individuals, as well as what the way forward is for organisations trying to create an inclusive workplace.
